Mere Sands Wood nature reserve, near Ormskirk, covers 105 acres.  It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest owing not only to its flora and fauna, but also to its geological importance.  Layers of peat and sand have remained unchanged since the ice age and the site is owned and run by Lancashire Wildlife Trust, both paid staff and volunteers.  It is a haven for photographers as well as bird-watchers and to find out more about the reserve you can visit their website:    http://www.lancswt.org.uk/places-to-see/mere-sands-wood-nature-reserve

Mere Sands Wood are holding their annual photographic competition with 2 sections; 1 section for wildlife photographs taken on the reserve and 1 section for wildlife photographs taken elsewhere.  So if you want a reason to get out and about with your camera, then perhaps a day out at Mere Sands is the perfect way.

The last day for entries is Thursday, 31 October.

The last time I visited, there was a coffee machine and sweets but no café so I think a packed lunch would be required.

Here is the link to the competition. :  http://www.lancswt.org.uk/places-to-see/mere-sands-wood-nature-reserve/mere-sands-wood-amateur-photography-competition
